About French Open 2019
The French Open is one of the four Grand Slams played in between the last week of May and the early week of June. This major tennis tournament takes place in Paris, France. This is the only Grand Slam that is played in a Clay Court. The French Open 2019 was played from 20th May to 9 June 2019.
French Open History
The French Open was started in 1891. Initially, French players or foreigners who were members of the French Club were allowed to take part in the tournament.
The Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles and the Women’s Doubles were included in 1897 (only four participants), 1902 and 1907 respectively.
The 1st winner of the French Open was H. Briggs of Britain who defeated P. Baigneres of France by 6-3, 6-4.
Men’s Singles Winners
In the Men’s Singles tournament the defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated Dominic Thiem of Austria by 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the 12th time.
Women’s Singles Winners
Ashleigh Barty of Australia won the title by defeating Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-1.
It was the 1st Grand Slam of the Australian Champion. She also became the first Australian male or female player to win the singles title since Margaret Court in 1973.
Men’s Doubles Winners
Winners:- Kevin Kraweitz and Andreas Mies of Germany.
Runners-up:- Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin of France.
Women’s Doubles Winners
Winners:- Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic of France.
Runners-up:- Duan Yingying and Zheng Saisai of China.
Mixed Doubles Winners
Winners:- Latisha Chan of Chinese Taipei and Ivan Dodig of Croatia.
Runners-up:- Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Mate Pavic of Croatia.
Boy’s Singles Winners
Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune of Denmark o the title by defeating Toby Alex Kodat of the United States.
Girl’s Singles Winners
Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada won the title by defeating Emma Navarro of the United States in the final, 6-3, 6-2.
The 2019 French Open is the 123rd edition. It took place at Stade Roland Garros in Paris. The prize money was 42,661,000 Euros.
